Music - Derek Norval has been Principal Teacher of Music and then Course Director of the Music School in Douglas Academy for the last thirty-five years.  He has worked extensively for the SQA as a Setter, Visiting Assessor, Visiting Verifier, marker and Senior Examiner.  He has been Principal Assessor for Advanced Higher Music for fifteen years and has also had responsibility for the central marking of Music with Technology.  He has written and supervised the writing of materials for Learning Teaching Scotland.  Other duties for SQA have included development visits to schools throughout Scotland and he was also a Development Officer during the revision of the NQ Music courses.

The day will encompass shared information sessions and workshops in the following areas:

  • Introduction to the structure of N3, N4, N5, H and AH Music Units and Courses
  • Teaching and assessing  Composition with examples at each level
  • Preparing and assessing candidates’ Performing for Unit and Course presentations at each level with marked examples
  • Approaches to teaching and assessing the use of Listening Concepts in the Question Papers at N5, Higher and Advanced Higher

This course will look at the structure of the Revised Higher Music course and the teaching and assessing of the New Higher Composition Assignment. The day will also encompass shared information sessions and workshops in the following areas:

  • Adaptation of Units and their place in Senior Phase classes
  • Shared N5 Composition Assignment experiences
  • Dealing with the Higher Assignment Review
  • The future for Composition at Advanced Higher
  • Preparing and assessing candidates’ Performing

Approaches to teaching and assessing the use of the Listening Concepts
