Lorraine Cochrane was a Principal Teacher of Support for Learning for 21 years, before moving to work in the Further Education sector.  She has delivered training at local and authority level, and has presented at HMIe and Learning & Teaching Scotland events.

Her interest is in the use of effective learning and teaching methods to support all learners within the classroom. She is a passionate advocate of the role that ICT has to play in promoting successful learning.





Ann Marie Whiteside: Ann Marie has over 20 years experience in a variety of education and children’s service’s posts, ranging from classroom teacher to senior manager with overall responsibility for all aspects of primary and secondary school provision within a local authority area.

Her specialist area is Quality Assurance, including self evaluation and improvement planning. She has extensive knowledge and skills in supporting schools to secure improvement in the overall quality of teaching and educational provision.

Managing your department course

This course is a practical and hands-on approach to managing and leading a department/faculty, aimed at those new to this and also those who would like further help and advice on the various aspects of managing a department. It addresses a wide range of management issues, including how to deal with challenges and underperformance in the team. There will be clear advice on effective leadership for learning in the context of Curriculum for Excellence, as well as structuring self-evaluation throughout the year to ensure improved attainment and achievement for all pupils. Other topics will include analysis and use of data to evaluate performances as well as how to prepare for an HMIe inspection.

CfE - Developing Research Skills to Assist Independent Learning

A Curriculum for Excellence states that young people will be able: “To develop the capacity for critical thinking, through accessing, analysing and using information.”

One way to promote this capacity is through independent research; however, for many pupils, this involves little more than the copying of facts and figures. This course aims to look at strategies to support pupils in the techniques of research, note-taking and writing a final report.

This course will look at:

  • setting clear tasks and time-scales
  • use of guidance notes and writing frames
  • involving parents/carers in delivering appropriate support
  • the use of ICT and Social Tools
  • taking and organising effective notes
  • presenting the final report

Curriculum for Excellence: Using ICT to Enhance Learning

Curriculum for Excellence states that pupils should “use ICT effectively in different learning contexts across the curriculum to access, select and present relevant information in a range of tasks”.

This course will look at a variety of software programmes which support the use of ICT to enhance learning. As well as looking at the recognised main commercial software programmes used in schools, there will be an emphasis on utilising the variety of freeware and shareware software now available to schools and pupils. There will also be a focus on the use of Social Tools to promote collaborative learning.
